Exploring spatial compositions through the manipulation of modules
Location: River north, Chicago, Illinois
Frame proposed an art community center along the main branch of the Chicago river in Chicago, Illinois. The site is situated between the main street level and the lower adjacent riverwalk. The idea is to develop an architectural form that connects different levels of the site and respond to its immediate context. Influenced by Peter Zumthor’s theory of the two possibilities of spatial composition, Frame explores the integration of the two possibilities. Using frame structure to define the volume of the built environment, program blocks to divide space, and walkways to connect the levels and programs, the goal is to introduce a new spatial experience for the users while blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor space.
